A remodel is reconfiguring the bathroom and the tub location is changing anyway

Be realistic about what replacement involves. A new tub of comparable quality is expensive -- cast iron reproductions run well into four figures -- and removing the old one means wrestling several hundred pounds of iron out of your bathroom, often with demolition of surrounding tile. Full bathtub replacement typically runs $3,000 - $7,000 installed. For a vintage clawfoot, replacement also means losing the original fixture's character, which is often a selling point in a historic home.

Repair vs. Full Restoration
